Overview

When detected soon enough, tooth decay is addressed with a standard filling or something similar to remove the decay and close off the area. However, when the decay moves beyond the outer tooth and affects the inner portion of the tooth, you may need a root canal. Also called an endodontic treatment, root canal therapy at Ah! Dentistry removes the decayed pulp from the tooth, disinfects the cavity, and then fills and seals the tooth. Our highly qualified dentists may recommend a root canal to DFW area men and women to treat the infection and keep the decay from extending to other teeth (which creates additional issues).

If you think you could benefit from root canal therapy, we understand if you might have reservations about undergoing the procedure. Though root canals are a common dental treatment, patients often shy away from going to the dentist to address tooth pain because of anxiety and fear. Our team can help to keep you at ease and comfortable, but we also provide sedation for any fear and anxiety. Contact Ah! Dentistry to arrange a consultation for more information on sedation dentistry and root canals.

Best Candidates

An infection that reaches the pulp of your tooth might be the result of a severe crack or deep cavity in the tooth or a physical injury. Common signs that you might have a tooth infection are tooth pain, jaw pain, swollen and discolored gums, and discoloration of the affected tooth. If the infected pulp is not treated, the pain and swelling will increase as the infection spreads to the rest of the mouth. Schedule an appointment at Ah! Dentistry at your earliest convenience if you notice any changes in your mouth. If you have anxieties or reservations about going to the dentist, do not hesitate to ask us about sedation dentistry to help you remain calm and at ease during your dental treatments.

What To Expect

Prior to the treatment, your anesthetic/sedation options will be discussed during a consultation. We do not want you to feel nervous, anxious, or scared during your appointment. Several individuals opt for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral-conscious sedation to undergo a root canal. Our team understands and empathizes with those who have dental phobias, and will try to help you make the best decision for your sedation needs.

To perform an endodontic procedure, we will examine the innermost part of your tooth and carefully extract the affected pulp. Next, the inner chamber will be meticulously cleaned to eliminate remaining debris. To conclude the procedure, the tooth is filled with a dental filler to seal and protect it from further decay.

Recovery

Based on the method of sedation that was chosen, you might need to have an adult drive you home following your appointment. You should expect your mouth to feel tender or swollen, but these symptoms are minor and can be reduced with anti-inflammatory medications. We ask that you arrange for a checkup about six months post-procedure. We will examine the area to determine if the infection has been controlled and that there is no cause for concern. Afterward, you should continue to schedule yearly dental checkups and twice-yearly dental cleanings to maintain your oral health.

Insurance Coverage

During your consultation, we will discuss cost estimates to align your treatments with your health needs and your budget. If you currently have dental insurance, we will speak with your provider to figure out your benefits. If you do not have dental insurance, Ah! Dentistry takes a number of payment methods and can assist you in finding medical financing options.
