A crown may be wanted or needed for several different reasons. They may be placed to cover a decaying tooth to prevent it from chipping or it may hold together an already cracked tooth. They may be used to strengthen a tooth with a lot of decay that will not take a tooth-colored filling, serve as part of a dental bridge, or hide discolored or misshapen teeth. At your consultation, we will take dental impressions so your crown can be made to fit your tooth. In some cases, a temporary dental crown may be used to cover your tooth as your permanent crown is being crafted. As soon as your custom crown is made, the treatment area will be given a local numbing anesthetic. Stronger sedation techniques may be used to soothe any fears or anxieties. When the anesthesia has taken effect, your tooth will be prepped by cleaning away any decay, then the enamel will be lightly filed to create space for your dental crown. Your dental crown can be either glued to your tooth or connected to an implant. Once set, the crown’s fit can be adjusted so that it is comfortable.

You will be able to leave our office once the procedure is done and continue your daily activities. A member of our team will teach you how to care for your dental crown, including any foods that should be avoided and cleaning. During your yearly examinations at Ah! Dentistry, we will evaluate your dental crown and adjust it to keep it comfortable. We will also let you know when your crown should be replaced; however, with good care, it may last for several years. If you notice any trouble with your crown (if it falls out or becomes loose), call our office immediately. Do not try to repair it or reattach it because this may cause an infection or a bad fit.
